I installed a cd writer plus 9310i but my computer doesn't spot it. everything is hooked up right?

i don't hold the installation disc. tried hp but got the run around. any suggestions on what to do? the cable are connected but the computer shows it as a cd rom drive. the driver is a generic cd rom driver from the computer. the master/slave switch is correct.
