How to connect a guitar to a notebook?

Ok , i bought a 1/4 to 1/8 cable from radio shack I plugged it surrounded by to my pc to string and it sounds amazing but when i enter guitarfx3 theres no effect no matter what i do.So afterwards i try plugging it in tho my mic jack doesent even variety a sound someone plz back me getting the effects

what you have to do is run your guitar within to your amp and out of your amp in to your notebook. the reason that it is out of use is because the sound have to be apmlified. for it to work. well i hope this help you out and good luck next to it.
